一枚の写真を見て、ふと、これは現実なのだろうかと思う感覚がある。
確かにそこには実在する被写体が写っている。
その写真を通じて私たちがみる世界は、それをみている一人一人の世界であって、それは現実でもあり、非現実にもなりうる。
そこには色があり、音が聞こえ、においを感じ、肌を刺激する。今日も人々の暮らしがあり、新しい命が生まれ、若くして命を落としていく。暑かったり、空腹だったり、幸せだったりする。そこには複雑な感情が存在する。
フレーミングされた写真という限られたものを通じて、そのフレームの外側に広がる限りない現実を伝えたい。

世界にはこんなところがあるのだと気づいてくれるだけでもいい。
それからもっと深く知りたいと思い、学ぼうとする人が出てきて下さるかもしれない。
何かしなくては、と募金をして下さる人が出てくれるかもしれない。
もっと身近な家族や友達を大切にしようと思うだけでもいい。
昨日の自分を反省するだけでもいい。
そして明日からがんばろう！と思ってくれるだけでもいい。

それが直接じゃなくても世界のどこかで苦しんでいる人々を少しでも幸せに出来ると信じている。そのとき本当の意味で写真が何かを語り始めるのかも知れない。

When you look at a photograph, you may wonder if it is real.
Indeed, the subject depicted in the photograph exists.
The world we see through that photograph is the world of each individual who views it, and it can be both reality and unreality.
There are colours, sounds, smells, and sensations that stimulate the skin. Today, people live their lives, new lives are born, and young lives are lost. There is heat, hunger, happiness. There are complex emotions.
Through the limited medium of a framed photograph, I want to convey the boundless reality that extends beyond the frame.

If people can simply become aware that such places exist in the world, that is enough.
Perhaps some will be inspired to learn more deeply and seek knowledge.
Perhaps some will feel compelled to donate.
Perhaps some will simply resolve to cherish their family and friends more deeply.
Even if it’s just reflecting on yesterday’s self.
And even if it’s just thinking, “I’ll try harder from tomorrow!”

I believe that even if it’s not direct, it can bring a little happiness to people suffering somewhere in the world. Perhaps that’s when photography truly begins to speak.
